WORKSHOP REPORT on the organization of a scientific journal held at the Kinshasa school of Medicine in October 2016 by Annales Africaines de Médecine (African Annals of Medicine)
We have organized, from October 18th to 21st, a workshop on How to manage a scientific journal with the collaboration with ARES (Académie de Recherche et d’Enseignement Supérieur francophone Belge). It was located at the School of Medicine/University of Kinshasa. Two members from all the 14 faculties of the University of Kinshasa were invited as participants. Professor Jean- Marie Kayembe Editor in chief, Professor Ernest Sumaili, Deputy chief editor, and Professor Pius Kabututu, Associate editor of Annales Africaines de Médecine (AAM) were the main speakers during this interactive workshop. The objectives were : how to improve the visibility of a scientific journal (sustainability, ensure editor’s professionalism, maintaining scientific integrity, adhesion to international standards, handling conflict of interest, policy on duplicate publications, improving quality of papers, Peer review and the role of the editorial board beyond of the journal editor, authorship). We have shared with other editors, the experience of AAM through the support of AJPP. Out of 28 participants registered for the workshop, 25 of them (89%) completed the workshop successfully. The participants were form eleven following faculties: Law (2), Letter (2), Veterinary medicine (2), Sciences (2), Agronomy (3), Economic Sciences (2), Pharmaceutical (2), Polytechnic (3), Psychological and Education (2), Political Sciences (3) and Medicine (2). Lessons taken: improvement of the collaboration at the local level, and sharing experience on the management of a scientific journal from all the faculties. The story of AAM appeared as a very good example for the sustainability and the accreditation of the University of Kinshasa.
