Context and objective. Intestinal schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), especially among school-aged children in rural settings. Updated data on prevalence and infection intensity remain limited in certain health areas of Kongo-Central Province. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and intensity of Schistosoma mansoni infection among school-aged children. Methods. A cross-sectional descriptive survey was carried out among schoolchildren from two primary schools in Lemfu health area, DRC. Detection of S. mansoni infection was performed using the Kato-Katz technique on the participants ‘stool samples. Results. A total of 216 schoolchildren were enrolled. The median age was 10 years (IQR: 11) and girls made up the majority (53%). Total overall prevalence of S. mansoni infection was 81% (95% CI: 74.7-85.3), significant higher Nsungamantemo than in Saint-Joseph ’ s schools (88% vs 74%, p = 0.01). Among infected children, 37.4% had light infection, 31% moderate infection, and 31.6% heavy infection, corresponding to 62.6% moderate-to-heavy infections. There was no statistically significant relationship between infection or intensity infection and age or sex. Conclusion. S. mansoni infection is highly endemic in the Lemfu health area, and the proportion of severe infections Annales Africaines de Médecine Article original remains a serious concern. Strengthening integrated control strategies, including regular preventive treatment and improvements water, hygiene and sanitation infrastructure, appears necessary.

Conclusion.
